Differences Between PE Water Supply Pipe and PE Gas Pipe, Avoid Wrong Selection

PE pipes are widely used in municipal water supply and gas transportation for their excellent toughness, corrosion resistance and convenient hot melt connection. Many purchasers and constructors confuse PE water supply pipes with PE gas pipes and even replace one with the other, which brings serious safety risks. Although both are based on polyethylene, they differ greatly in raw material formula, pressure rating, color marking, performance indicators, test standards and safety requirements. Cross substitution is not allowed. This article compares them in multiple dimensions to support correct engineering selection.

First of all, they adopt different resin grades. PE water supply pipes commonly use PE80 and PE100 polyethylene, meeting hygienic requirements for drinking water and long-term hydrostatic strength. PE gas pipes adopt special PE100-RC and PE80-RC resins with resistance to slow crack growth. After burial, soil settlement and sharp stone extrusion may cause slow crack propagation. Penetrating cracks will lead to gas leakage and explosion. RC crack-resistant resin effectively restrains slow crack growth, a key property that ordinary water-grade PE materials do not have. Water-grade raw materials must comply with drinking water sanitary standards without heavy metal and harmful leachables. Gas-grade materials focus on stress crack resistance instead of sanitary indicators.

Secondly, they have different color codes and markings. According to national standards, PE water supply pipes are mainly blue or black with blue stripes. PE gas pipes are yellow or black with yellow stripes. Color is the most intuitive identification method. Markings printed on pipe surfaces show material grade, SDR, standard and manufacturer. PE gas pipes follow GB/T 15558, while PE water supply pipes follow GB/T 13663. Checking the standard number is the first step during incoming inspection.

Thirdly, they have different pressure ratings under the same SDR. Both use SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) to define wall thickness, yet the design pressure differs. Taking PE100 SDR11 as an example: the design pressure of water supply pipe is 1.6 MPa, while that of gas pipe is generally 0.4 MPa. Gas is hazardous pressurized medium. Gas pipelines face stricter limits on creep and crack growth, so the allowable working pressure of gas pipes is much lower for the same size. Do not apply water pressure experience to gas projects.

Fourthly, test items and acceptance rules are different. PE water supply pipes focus on hydrostatic strength, sanitary performance, oxidation induction time and longitudinal reversion to guarantee water quality. Besides basic mechanical tests, PE gas pipes require mandatory slow crack growth test, notch test and gas resistance test to simulate buried geological conditions and long-term gas erosion. As hazardous pressure piping, gas pipes are subject to stricter supervision, inspection and document management.

Finally, cross substitution is forbidden. PE gas pipes cannot carry drinking water because their materials are not certified for sanitary safety and may release pollutants. PE water supply pipes cannot replace gas pipes. Ordinary PE resin lacks anti-crack performance and may crack slowly under buried load, causing gas leakage and severe violation.

Selection summary: For water supply projects, choose blue PE water supply pipes complying with GB/T13663. For buried urban gas networks, yellow RC-grade PE gas pipes complying with GB/T15558 are mandatory. Store and distribute them separately with clear labels. Never mix them up merely because the outer diameter and wall thickness look similar. Match pipes strictly according to conveyed medium to prevent safety accidents.
